Sensory Development: Late Integration of Multiple Cues

نویسنده

چکیده

Young children use multiple cues to appreciate the three-dimensional structure of the world. A new study reveals that these cues are properly integrated only years later, thus showing that sensory development is protracted well into teenage years.

Sensory Development: Childhood Changes in Visual Cortical Function

A new study reveals that the integration of multiple visual depth cues in visual cortex develops surprisingly late in human childhood.

Flexible integration of visual cues in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder

Although children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show atypical sensory processing, evidence for impaired integration of multisensory information has been mixed. In this study, we took a Bayesian model-based approach to assess within-modality integration of congruent and incongruent texture and disparity cues to judge slant in typical and autistic adolescents. Human adults optimally combine...

Sensory Integration and Autistic Spectrum Disorder

The theory and practice of sensory integration were developed in the late 1960s by an occupational therapist and psychologist, Dr. A. Jean Ayres [1]. Also, known as sensory processing, it is “the neurological process that organizes sensation from one’s own body and from the environment and makes it possible to use the body effectively within the environment” [1].

Late Development of Cue Integration Is Linked to Sensory Fusion in Cortex

Adults optimize perceptual judgements by integrating different types of sensory information [1, 2]. This engages specialized neural circuits that fuse signals from the same [3-5] or different [6] modalities. Whereas young children can use sensory cues independently, adult-like precision gains from cue combination only emerge around ages 10 to 11 years [7-9]. Why does it take so long to make bes...

Hearing Where the Eyes See: Children Use an Irrelevant Visual Cue When Localizing Sounds.

To reduce sensory uncertainty, humans combine cues from multiple senses. However, in everyday life, many co-occurring cues are irrelevant to the task at hand. How do humans know which cues to ignore? And does this ability change with development? This study shows the ability to ignore cross-modal irrelevant information develops late in childhood. Participants performed a sound discrimination ta...
